EMDR Level 2 Training (Child Focus) is:

  • Three day in-person workshop

    Preworkshop

  • 2 hours online learning

  • 2 hrs of facilitated online practicum (1 week before the in-person training)

Overview of EMDR Level 2 Training

This training gives you knowledge, competence, and confidence to adapt EMDR therapy, as an evidence-based trauma treatment (WHO, 2013; ISTSS, 2020; Phoenix, 2020) into your clinical work with children and adolescents. This Level 2 EMDR training introduces how to creatively adapt each phase of EMDR therapy to the child’s developmental age (0-4, 5-12, 13-18 years) and needs.

The training teaches specific skills and techniques for how to prepare younger clients for trauma-focused work, how to compassionately understand blocks, fears, and resistance to memory reprocessing, and incorporates consideration for working with families, and processing of preverbal trauma. This training includes advanced AIP case conceptualisation for complex PTSD and comorbid presentations across the life span, fidelity to the standard protocol, and advanced EMDR skills, such as interweaves, resourcing, and techniques for dissociation. Various preparation and memory reprocessing protocols are taught in a way that allows creative, flexible, and effective use with clients across the lifespan.

EMDR Level 2 Course Content and Objectives

  • Know the theory underlying EMDR and evidence for its use with children and adolescents.
  • Have the ability to provide children, adolescents, and parents a rationale for trauma-focused work and describe memory and the procedure of EMDR therapy.
  • Be familiar with how to adjust each phase of EMDR to the developmental age and needs of the young person.
  • Conceptualise and develop a treatment plan for simple and complex case presentations within an EMDR AIP framework.
  • Consciously conceptualise the preparation phase with clients across the life span.
  • Understand the role of parents in EMDR therapy in all phases of treatment.
  • Effectively use resource development techniques and cognitive interweaves.
  • Know how to work with and treat preverbal trauma using an EMDR storytelling method.
  • Gain competence in the use of restricted and contained memory reprocessing protocols.
  • Further explore the application and adaptations of EMDR to various populations and clinical presentations beyond PTSD.
  • Consider a theory of dissociation and learn the implications and considerations of dissociation in each phase of EMDR for younger clients.
  • Know how to consider the different implementation of EMDR in terms of treatment dose and delivery (i.e., in weekly sessions or more intensive forms).
  • Engage in learning through video of client sessions and live demonstration of advanced EMDR techniques.
  • Engage in facilitated small group practicum of preparation techniques and EMDR memory reprocessing phases.

Prerequisite for EMDR Training Level 2:

  • Completion of an EMDR Level 1 (Introductory) training accredited by the EMDR Association of Australia
  • Experience (at least 4 clients) using EMDR memory reprocessing with clients.

Ongoing learning:

  • It is recommended that learning is consolidated through EMDR consultation with an EMDR child consultant. Participants will be provided with direction to ongoing learning in the field of EMDR therapy and appropriately accredited EMDR Consultants.

Training Certificates:

A certificate of attendance is provided on completion of the EMDR Level 2 workshop.

Certificates of completion of EMDR Basic Training are provided on the completion of all training requirements (EMDR Level 1, EMDR level 2, and 10 hours of EMDR consultation) within a 2 year time frame.

EMDR Training Eligibility and Conditions:

EMDR Basic Training, including Level 1, is for eligible mental health professionals who are looking to learn EMDR therapy.
